CPS is one of the premier rebooting companies in the industry with thousands and thousands of units installed worldwide. Some of our unique innovations can now be found in other rebooting products throughout the industry. In fact, we started building rebooting and AC power control devices for the old analog modems (4800 bps on dial and dedicated multi-point networks... huh?). In the beginning, the boxes would look at the control signals or simply count the rings. If the control signals didn't transition or if the modem didn't answer in xx rings (hung) it would reboot the AC power where the modem was connected.
The Ring Count concept still holds true today for DSL modems, with a little different twist. It is still the most simple and economical method to do a basic remote reboot available today and it is still a standard no charge feature on all of the newer CPS products, used primarily as a back up procedure.
The product line has evolved to include other AC and DC power control products to keep pace with digital modems, routers, networks, firewalls as well as other current technology. Additional Base Units have evolved along with additional methods to control them such as External Controller Boxes** and Automatic Software utilities.
They addressed both Local control applications using RS-232 or USB and Remote control requirements using a standard phone line or over an IP Network. A Cell controller is also available. The controllers could connect to any of the Base Units, which resulted in a very flexible approach to meet a variety of AC Power control requirements from small single unit applications to controlling server racks.
Now, in it's current state of evolution, the product line is evolving into a "single box" approach by marrying the more popular controllers and base units into a single box that address some of the more popular basic applications. However, the controllers as well as other CPS products still play a prominent roll when moving beyond basic On/OFF control and configuring more complicated or extended power control systems. CPS products are used in a variety of applications, primarily in distributive applications like kiosks, digital signs, VOIP, monitoring equipment, video conferencing, video walls, security systems, observatories, locally in labs and test centers, or actually anywhere there is 1-720 pieces of equipment that may need an occasional reboot or direct ON/OFF control. For basic rebooting, the cost is normally justified the first time that it is used, by eliminating one service call and/or by considering the cost of downtime. Generally, the standard telephone line represents the most economical method to initiate Remote Control even with the addition of direct "Touch-tone" control* (ring reboot is standard). IP control over a network generally adds about $75.00 or up to $170.00 for an external controller to the cost of a product. The Telco control features are then used as backup for out of band control. Local Control with RS-232 or USB is also standard on most products. Other Remote Controllers such as the Cell Controller can add up to $425.00. By combining the products you can build single an automatic pinger for as little as $115.00 or control up to 750 servers (on, off, reset) for about $15-$16 per server.

The products are used for a variety of applications so first scan down through the thumbnail pics below and see if anything jumps out at you. There are really only two main decisions that you will have to make. How to you want to connect to the "Target device" and how you want to control it.

Target Connection Column
The choices are: AC power, DC power or Reset Pins on a PC motherboard (MB) or a simple relay closure. Most of the time, the AC power connection to the target device provides the most simple and straight forward connection. Scan down the column "Target Connections". If you are in North America any of the AC power units will work for you. If in Europe or other international countries select one that is rated at 220V or greater.

Then decide how may AC outlets that you need. Do they all react to one command or controlled separately.
The type of AC Jack should also be selected.
(NA) = NEMA- 5-15 North American - Standard 15 Amp North American AC jack.
(320) = Standard IEC 320 jack - International standard AC jack. With this, the customer normally supplies the proper connecting AC cord locally (country dependent). Some products offer both. On those, either can be specified (NA/320). Even if the product that you select only has IEC 320s and you need a North American connector, a small 1' adapter cable can be ordered ($2.25). No big deal. In fact some customers prefer it so that it can be use anywhere with the proper adapter cord.
Then decide how do I want to control it:
Control Methods Column
Locally: The choices are: RS-232, USB or 5V TTL logic
Remotely: The choices are: Using a standard Telephone line (Ring Count or full Touch tone control - ITTO*). Using an IP address over a network or control over a wireless cell network.
Automatically: Using one of the free software utilities with a method of local control. See "Automatic Control".
The control methods are also listed in the order that are most popular for that product. There will probably be more methods of control available standard than you were considering when you began your search. You can just ignore them or use them for backup, if practical. They can all be used simultaneously.
Automatic Control Column
This is normally used for automatic resets. They are generated through FREE software packages supplied with the product selected. The software runs on a handy Windows based PC/server which is connected to the selected "product" through its serial port (required). The PC/software then issues reset commands through the serial port when a condition is met. So if automatic control enters into your decision scan down the "Automatic Software" column. The two primary automatic software packages are:
Auto Ping (AP) pings over the network normally through a modem or router and waits for a return ping. If the return ping is not detected it is assumed that the modem or router is hung and the software issues a rest command to the "Product" through the serial port. Note the "APC" is a stand alone "pinger" and does not require a local PC to run the software. Both are highly configurable.
The Heartbeat (HB) Software is similar except that it is intended to reset a server, on which it is running, that may be hung. It detects a heartbeat signal from the server through the serial port. When it is absent it assumes that the server is hung and automatically Resets the AC Power supplying the AC power to the server. A DLL is also available to help incorporate the reset commands into your application software.

The Controllers are optional interface boxes that provide an interface to other CPS products (Base Units) that do not have the desired interface built in.
As an example the 12-Con (12 Port Concentrator) has an RS-232 control interface built in, but if you wanted to control it over an IP network you would need an N-RRC (Network Controller). If you needed a telephone line controller, you would need one of the various Telephone Line controllers (SP-RRC, 3P-RRC or MP-RRC). Where no phone line is available, you might need a wireless Cell Controller (CRC).
Note that many of the products already have an IP and/or phone line controllers built in so no additional controller would be required unless the external controller box had a must have option that the internal controlled did not have. Most of the external controller boxes were built for the AC power control Category of products, above. Although a number are being used with the AB-M remote switching units as well as other products with only the basic RS-232 interface, or none.
CPS offers a number of FREE administrative and operational software products to control the Rebooting hardware. The operational software normally requires Base Units with RS-232 ports. If RS-232 ports are not available on the "Control PC", see the USB to Serial Cable adapter. Note that USB is currently being implemented on some Base Units.
Some of the newer "Heartbeat" and "Auto Ping" software can run as an service at the remote locations independent of the WAN. They also have e-mail notification. See Software.

COMMANDER - Administrative database used to help manage and configure CPS products.
HEARTBEAT - Windows based software that runs on the target machine to automatically reboot externally through the serial port when it hangs. Heartbeat compatible Base Unit is required. Use on Kiosks or single servers.
Serial DLL - Provides reboot type program calls to control the serial port. Easy to incorporate reboots into your software if the application hangs.
HEARTBEAT-S - Same as above excepts runs as a service + E-mail notification.
SERIAL NET - Allows TELNET type messages to be sent to a remote serial port over the network.
AUTO PING - Runs as a service on a remote PC to automatically reboot surrounding equipment through its serial port if the return ping(s) fail + e-mail notice. Mix any of the Addressable Base Units.
Note that Automatic Local control and Remote control are not mutually exclusive. They can be used together.
