So your' looking for an AC power switch that can be controlled over a TCP/IP network...
but what happens when the network hangs? What's you backup plan?
... Start thinking N-AC1. It has price, performance and the backup features that you need... plus more.

WHAT IS IT?
The N-AC1 is primarily a TCP/IP NETWORK Controlled AC power switch that allows you to control the AC power ON/OFF/RESET on remote devices. It also has an automatically enabled out of band ring reboot and an auto power cycle feature as well as RS-232 and other methods to control it. These are primarily used for backup although they may be included in the primary application of the product. Any or all of the features may be used simultaneously which also present a broad range of application possibilities.

It can be controlled and configured through the Network Port or its RS-232 Port. The functional redundancy of these two Control Ports allows for maximum convenience and flexibility for both set up and operation i.e., during run time, you may control the NC-AC1 with a local PC through the serial port while retaining the remote browser control for further control options or status inquiries. Network access requires a Username & Password whereas RS-232 can be directly accessed.

Ring Reboot/Auto Reboot
The local network status (where the box is located), is determined automatically through a user selectable background pinging algorithm. When the pinging algorithm is normal the phone line is disconnected. It is connected only when the ping responses stop indicating a "hung" condition, thereby enabling the ring reboot feature. This allows the line to be shared with a fax, modem or other TelCo devices. It also eliminates the possibility of arbitrary rings from resetting the unit during normal run times. No additional problematic modems are required.

The Auto Reboot feature is enabled in the same manner. It will cause an auto power cycle before establishing the telephone line connection, if selected. This is a handy backup option that can be used where a phone line may not be available. Note that the N-AC1 also pings itself as an internal check and software reset.

RS-232 Configuration, Control and Inquiry
The NC-AC1 can be configured through a serial port using a PC with a terminal emulator, such as HyperTerminal. To provide a feel for the simplicity of the RS-232 entries, the following are some examples used for configuration and Control. See the instructions for a complete list.
Network Configuration *IPxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx This sets the IP address of the N-AC1. (xxx = IP address)
Security (Username & Password) *USxxxx This sets the Username (4-10 characters)
NAC-1 operating preferences *PRx This sets the power recycle OFF time (5-90 seconds)
Ring Control *RCx This sets the ring recycle trigger (1-9 rings)
Ping target addresses *TPxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx This set the background ping test address.

Control *PON This turns the power ON
Inquiry *?P1 This displays the status of the AC power

Push Button Control
You can also control the AC power to the "Out" AC jack with a RESET button on the unit. It can be used to toggle the ON/OFF states as well to perform a RESET when held. An alternate push button pattern can be selected enabling direct ON/OF/RESET commands. As an example you can use the push button to turn the N-AC1 ON and use the network to turn it OFF or visa-versa. The Remote Push Button Version is supplied with a 6' cable that can be extended up to 3000' from the N-AC1. The corresponding heavy-duty push button switch requires a 0.755" diameter hole for permanent mounting at the user's discretion.

The Hardware
The N-AC1 uses internationally standard IEC 320 AC connectors and has a broad auto sensing voltage range from 110-250V @ 15 amps (10 amps @ 220V). This makes it easy to use on power mains anywhere in the world with locally available power cords. The target devices to be controlled, simply connects to the switched AC "OUT" connector on the N-AC1, using the appropriate power cord adapters if required. Be sure to order the appropriate power cords separately or supply your own. See Below. The front panel supports three multi-function RJ-11 connectors for the phone line connection as well as for RS-232 set up and control functions. See diagram above.

SUMMARY OF CONTROL OPTIONS

Direct TCP/IP Network Control Use any browser. It can also be used to ping IPs on a local LAN.
Local Control from a PC is provided through the Serial/TelCo port.
Remote Control over a standard telephone line is provided through the Ring Count RESET feature (standard). This feature simply counts the rings and RESETS once the ring threshold is reached.
Manual Push Button Control Use the push button on the N-AC1 or the remote push button version.

Optional External Remote Controllers are also optionally available to provide additional methods of remote access.
Touch-Tone Controller (SP-RRC), is used when full Touch-tone ON/OFF/RESET control is required. It also has a password and full telephone line sharing. Use your cell phone or a land line. No pesky modems required.
Multi-Port Controller (MP-RRC), is use to connect several N-AC1s and control them with Touch-tones.
Cell Controller (C-RC) is used where no phone line or network access is available. Text or e-mail the AC Power Commands to the N-AC1.
Other controllers are also available, but these are the more popular.

FLEXIBILITY Plus, WOW!
You can use any of these methods as your primary method of control and one or more of the others as backup. But in its simplest form the N-AC1 is primarily a simple IP based remote AC power control unit.
